Volunteers

What causes volunteers to drive several hours to go to prison? Or (perhaps a better question) to drive or fly from Wisconsin or Texas to spend the weekend in a prison in Missouri? There is only one answer: God releases his power in amazing ways behind prison bars.

Disciple Unlimited volunteers give of their time and efforts in ways that enrich the prisoners’ lives, their own lives, and the Kingdom of God. With their dedication and participation, our ministry is able to impact thousands of inmates in several U.S. states and two continents.

Althea Turner’s Story

Last night, I spent an hour on the phone talking with Althea Turner. She had just gotten home from the Missouri outreach. Althea sings with Terry on the worship team and has traveled with us for a decade now.

Her sister, Cynthia, had a drug addiction, and Althea went through tremendous obstacles to secure this precious one. Now, Althea’s sister is clean and wants a relationship with Deavone. In fact, as Althea was ministering to women in prison, her daughter was at home with her birth mother.

Our women inmates can relate to Cynthia’s story. Our challenge is to open their eyes to the cost to family members who have surrendered plans and dreams to come alongside them.

Althea has suffered during this ordeal, yet she is praying about writing a booklet to help women understand the cost of sin and discipleship. She can now say with Paul, “What a wonderful God we have—He is the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the source of every mercy and the one who so wonderfully comforts and strengthens us in our hardships and trials. And why does He do this? So that when others are troubled, needing our sympathy and encouragement, we can pass on to them this same help and comfort God has given us.”

Now, Althea will come to our faith-based dorm and speak words of comfort and exhortation to our women in white.
